Smoking

The question of smoking in public areas has been important and unsettling during last decades and it still arouses the wide concern. Some people consider that smoking should be prohibited due to the negative consequences it may lead to, while others claim that enjoyment of basic rights overcomes the possible damaging impact.

As far as I am concerned, it would be wrong to ban smoking in public places. Firstly, making free decisions concerning personal life is one of the basic human rights that could not be infringed as smokers are aware of the risks and bear responsibility on their own. Besides, governments make huge profits from taxes on cigarettes, and tobacco industry employs thousands of workers, particularly in developing countries. By the way, smoking improves concentration, productivity, and relaxation for some people.

However, some people think that smoking in public areas should be prohibited.

They tend to focus on the life-threatening risks of lung diseases that smokers and secondhand smokers expose themselves to. Furthermore, children can see adults smoking in public places, which may encourage them to try cigarettes in order to show their maturity.

At the same time, I am sure that we are free to choose our way of living and we are liable for the possible outcome.

As a conclusion, it is important to emphasize that whether to smoke or not is an individual decision, but we should always remember about others well-being.
