Subject : the attention of people to changes in background details.

Purpose:

The aim of the report is to determine people’s abilities to detect changes.

The experiment:

The experiment was held among 50-people audience. The essence of it was that the magician showed a Color Changing Card Trick. The key is that during the experiment there were made four more color changes, which were not shown openly. The first two alterations were cloth changes by both participants. In the third trick the black tablecloth was replaced with the pink one. The same was made with the background cloth – it changed its color from violet to red.

Recognition of changes:

According to the diagram, there were quite a few people who detected these alterations. The first one with the magician’s shirt color change was recognized by 11 participants out of 50.

The second change was noticed by the largest number of people – 24. The third one with the tablecloth was the most secretive – just 9 out of 50 could see it. The last change was recognized just by 14 people.

The results:

From the diagram it can be inferred that people are not attentive enough. They were following the cards, not paying attention to the background changes. But some of them were recognized by quite a large amount of watchers, like the second trick when the woman changed her cloth, either because of a great contrast of colors ( from black to green ), or because of the fact that audience was looking at woman much more than at anything else ( besides the cards
